The Most Overused Pickup Lines of All Time

If you’ve ever been single and online dating, you know that there are specific phrases that get way too much use. “Hey, what’s up?” “How are you?” “You’re beautiful.” These are all fine and good, but they start to lose interest after a while. We’ve compiled a list of the most overused pickup lines. The next time you’re looking to start a conversation with someone new, try one of these lines and see if you can get a rise out of them.

“What’s your sign?”

This is perhaps the most classic pickup line of all time. It’s been used so many times that it’s lost all meaning. If you want to use it, go ahead, but be prepared for an eye roll.

“Do you come here often?”

This line is so overdone that it’s become a running joke. Chances are, if you use it, the person you’re talking to will either laugh in your face or give you a sarcastic answer. Either way, it’s not likely to lead to anything serious.

“You have a beautiful smile.”

There’s nothing wrong with complimenting someone on their appearance, but this line is so generic that it doesn’t say much. To compliment someone, be specific about what you like about them. Otherwise, they’ll think you’re trying to flatter them without getting to know them.

“I’d love to buy you a drink.”

Again, there’s nothing wrong with this line in and of itself. But if you use it, make sure you buy the person a drink! Offering someone a drink and then not following through is just rude. Plus, it makes you look cheap. So if you use this line, be prepared to open your wallet.

Our advice? Next time you’re feeling tongue-tied at a bar, try starting a conversation with one of these icebreakers instead:

  1. Compliment their outfit/hair/accessories.
  2. Strike up a conversation about something happening in the news or on TV.
  3. Bring up your shared love of dogs/cats/kids/plants (whatever it may be!).
  4. Pay them a genuine compliment—for example, tell them they have great energy or an infectious laugh.
  5. Ask them about their day or week—what’s been good or bad?
  6. Share something interesting about yourself—for example, where you grew up or what languages you speak fluently!

Whatever it is that makes you unique and exciting, go from there!

Pickup lines are a terrific approach to introducing yourself and discussing with a stranger. But if you want to use one, make sure it’s not one of these overly used-lines! Otherwise, you risk coming across as unoriginal or even insincere. Do yourself (and the person you’re talking to) a favour and steer clear of these tired old lines. Come up with something new instead!
